Frequently asked questions

The practical details, clearly answered.

A thoughtful care plan begins with clarity. Here are answers to the questions families most often ask before we speak.

Overnight care

Care that protects your rest.

What is awake overnight care?

I remain awake and attentive throughout the shift rather than planning to sleep between feeds. This creates dedicated, continuous overnight support and allows me to notice cues and respond promptly while parents receive protected rest.

Do you also offer traditional overnight care?

Yes. Awake care is my signature service, but I also offer traditional postpartum overnight support, where I may rest when your baby is safely sleeping. We can discuss which model best fits your priorities, home, and budget.

What happens during an overnight shift?

Depending on your family’s plan, I support feeding, paced bottles, burping, diapering, soothing, settling, bottle and pump-part care, baby laundry, nursery resets, and clear morning notes. I follow your baby’s needs and your household preferences.

What are your rates?

Traditional postpartum support begins at $70 per hour. Dedicated awake overnight care is a premium service and begins at $120 per hour. Your final care plan depends on schedule, location, shift length, holidays, and the support requested.

Do you sleep train babies?

No. My approach is responsive and developmentally respectful. I support age-appropriate rhythms, soothing, and safe sleep without leaving a young baby to manage distress alone.

Working together

Planning your care.

Where do you work?

I am based in Oakland and serve families across the Bay Area. Travel feasibility depends on location, schedule, shift length, and safe parking.

What are your typical shift lengths?

Overnight shifts are typically eight hours. Daytime visits are commonly four to six hours. Longer or customized schedules can be discussed based on availability and location.

What is the difference between a postpartum doula and a Newborn Care Specialist?

A postpartum doula supports the family as a whole during recovery and adjustment, while a Newborn Care Specialist has focused training and experience in hands-on newborn care. My work brings both perspectives together: practical support for parents alongside knowledgeable, responsive care for their baby.

When should I book overnight postpartum support?

Many families begin planning during pregnancy, especially when they want several nights per week or have specific dates in mind. It is still worth asking after your baby arrives; occasional openings may be available.

How many nights per week do families typically book?

Schedules vary. Many families choose two to five nights per week, depending on their goals, budget, other support, and how much protected rest they need. We can shape a schedule around your priorities and my availability.

Do you support breastmilk and formula feeding?

Yes. I respect each family’s feeding decisions and can support direct feeding, pumping routines, paced bottle feeding, formula preparation, burping, and bottle care within my professional scope.

Do you offer breastfeeding support?

Yes. I can help with basic breastfeeding support, including positioning, latch observation, feeding comfort, pumping routines, and recognizing when additional help may be useful. I am not an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), so concerns requiring clinical assessment, diagnosis, or a specialized feeding plan will be referred to an IBCLC or another appropriate healthcare provider.

What safe-sleep practices do you follow?

I follow AAP-aligned safe-sleep practices and am a Cribs for Kids Safe Sleep Ambassador. We will discuss your baby’s sleep space and household plan before care begins.

Can you work alongside a nanny or another newborn professional?

Yes. I value clear roles, consistent communication, and collaborative care. We can define responsibilities and handoffs before the schedule begins.

Can we use Carrot benefits?

Early Bloom is an approved Carrot postpartum doula provider. Mention Carrot in your inquiry so we can discuss your plan’s requirements and documentation.

How do scheduling, retainers, cancellations, and holidays work?

These details are outlined in your service agreement and reviewed before booking. Because each care plan is customized, I will explain the terms that apply to your dates, schedule, and service model during our consultation.

What should I share about pets, parking, or home access?

Please include anything that will help me arrive and work safely, including pets in the home, stairs or entry instructions, parking availability, and overnight access considerations.
